Today is Remembrance Day across Australia and the world, and local RSL sub branches will be hosting commemoration services across the three regions.
SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS
Last Friday 7th November, Bowral Sub - Branch members were out and about in the CBD of Bowral from about 8:30 am through until 1pm selling Remembrance poppies and badges.
“These funds raised are used to support any veterans and their families who need assistance,” Bowral RSL Sub - Branch president John Cummins said.
Today the Sub Branch will conduct their service at 10:40 am at the Bowral War Memorial at the bottom of Bong Bong St, (limited chairs will be provided).
“The Remembrance address will be delivered by the Sub - Branch Vice President Barry Wilmot,” Mr. Cummins added.
“Barry was born in Murray Bridge, South Australia on 2 March 1945, completing his primary and secondary education in Adelaide and then graduating as a Pharmacist from Adelaide University.
“On 28 September 1966 he reported to RTB Puckapunyal in Victoria for the commencement of his national service. He was selected to attend officer training and attended Officer Training Unit (OTU) Scheyville, near Windsor and graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant in July 1967.
“On leaving OTU he attended a course of instruction at the School of Army Health in Healesville, Victoria.
“He was then posted to Western Australia’s Western Command, working as an Army Pharmacist in the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps living with the Special Air Services Regiment at Campbell Barracks in Swanbourne in Perth, and he was to complete his National service in February 1969.
“Barry and his wife Deidre moved from Adelaide to the Southern Highlands and have resided at Pepperfield Lifestyle Resort for the last 9 years.”
After the service, the Sub Branch members will then conduct services at Bowral House Nursing Home and the Anthem Nursing Home.
Moss Vale Sub Branch will be holding their service at the memorial outside the Moss Vale Services Club from 11am, led by master of ceremonies, Jock Bidwell.
The Bundanoon Sub-Branch also held a Remembrance Day concert at the Soldier’s Memorial Hall on Sunday afternoon with Leichhardt Celebrity Brass entertaining those who attended with music from the war era. This was followed by a short memorial service to honour the fallen. It included a lament, The Last Post and the Ode.
The Bundanoon Sub-Branch will also be holding their service today at the Southern Villages Memorial, Railway Parade at 10:40am.
Mittagong Branch are asking their members to gather in the forecourt of the RSL Club from 10:30am for the start of their service at 10:45am.
There will also be services at the Exeter and Berrima war memorials from 10:45am.
WOLLONDILLY
The Camden RSL Sub Branch service will commence from 10:15am at the Cenotaph in Macarthur Park on Menangle Rd in Camden.
The City of Campbelltown RSL Sub Branch will be holding their service at Mawson Park commencing at 10:40am.
Picton Sub Branch will also hold their service at 11am with a bugle call and 1 minute’s silence at the Picton Memorial Park, Argyle St, Picton.
Wollondilly Sub-Branch will also gather with the students from Thirlmere Public School from 10:30am for an 11am service.
The Warragamba ANZAC Committee will also host their service at 10:45am at the Warragamba Memorial Park.
SOUTHERN TABLELANDS
The Goulburn RSL Sub Branch service will commence at Rocky Hill War Memorial at 10.30am.
As parking is limited, buses will leave for Rocky Hill from Carr-Confoy Park Road (at the base of Rocky Hill in Eastgrove) where ample car parking is available, from 9.30am and will return at the conclusion of the service.
The Yass RSL Sub Branch will be holding their commemorative service and wreath laying at the Cenotaph, Yass Soldiers Memorial Hall, 78 Comur St, from 11:00 am.
