The national rail safety regulator has announced freight operator Holdco Holdings (which trades as Southern Shorthaul Railroad) is now permitted to carry out limited maintenance operations at Berrima Junction, following a partial lifting of its accreditation suspension.

The Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) suspended Holdco's accreditation after a series of safety incidents culminating in the derailment at Berrima on 4 July.

Following a review of the company's submissions and a series of onsite inspections, National Rail Safety Regulator Dr Natalie Pelham decided to partially lift the suspension to allow some low-risk railway operations under additional regulatory oversight.

After The Southern Wire sought clarification on whether the decision applied to the Berrima site, an ONRSR spokesperson said, "Holdco is only permitted to undertake maintenance operations at Berrima Junction"

Holdco's accreditation remains suspended for all other parts of its railway operations under the original notice of immediate suspension.

ONRSR said it would continue investigating the Berrima derailment while working with Holdco in relation to the ongoing suspension.

"The priority remains to ensure that risks to the safety of those in the rail industry and members of the public are effectively managed," the regulator said.
