Department of Housing units in Goldsmith St Goulburn have been damaged due to a sprinkler system being set off and a small fire in one of the units, according to emergency services vehicles that attended the scene.

“NSW Ambulance paramedics treated a woman at the scene of the fire on Goldsmith St, Goulburn for smoke inhalation,” a spokesperson from NSW Ambulance told The Southern Wire.

A spokesperson from Fire and Rescue NSW also stated to The Southern Wire that around 12.15 this afternoon Fire and Rescue NSW responded to a unit block in Goldsmith St, Goulburn after activation of its automatic fire alarm system.

“The first arriving crew reported smoke issuing from a three - storey block of units with a fire in a second floor unit and requested more resources,” the spokesperson told The Southern Wire.

“They also reported that the unit was heavily smoke logged.

“Fire and Rescue NSW responded with 3 fire trucks and 12 firefighters to this emergency, with crews attending from Goulburn and as far away as Bundanoon and Crookwell.”

The Rural Fire Service also sent a fire truck and firefighters, with Police and Ambulance also in attendance.

The spokesperson added that firefighters were wearing air sets and were also equipped with hose lines and rushed into the unit block to attack the blaze.

“Firefighters also searched the entire unit block to ensure that no one was inside,” they said.

“The activation of the building’s sprinkler system assisted with extinguishment, and approximately 30 people were evacuated from the building.

“Firefighters were able give the building an ‘all clear’, meaning they had found no one inside and reported that it was a mattress on fire.”

At 12:48 pm firefighters reported that the fire had been extinguished and were commencing ‘salvage and overhaul’.

“An important task of ‘salvage and overhaul’ is to ventilate the building to remove all residual smoke,” the spokesperson added.

“Firefighters also used a positive pressure fan to blow out the smoke and used mops and squeegees to remove water. The fire affected unit also sustained significant smoke and water damage, with other units in the complex also suffering varying degrees of water and smoke damage.”

One person was assessed by ambulance on scene but was not transported to hospital.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, with firefighters leaving the scene at approximately 1.50pm and handing over the incident to Police.

The Southern Wire also approached Homes NSW who look after the unit complex for comment.
