Five level crossings between Buxton and Colo Vale will be reactivated from 22 July as work on the Loop Line Upgrade Project enters its final stages.

The reactivation marks a significant milestone for the project, allowing rail construction vehicles and later ballast trains to begin using the upgraded section of line. It will also enable testing and crew training ahead of the line’s completion and opening later this year.

The level crossings being reactivated are:

  • East Parade, Buxton South

  • Balmoral Village

  • Railway Parade, Balmoral South

  • Coates Road, Hill Top

  • Fitzroy Street, Hill Top

Transport Heritage NSW has completed a range of safety upgrades at each crossing, including improved visibility and road surface improvements to provide safer access for motorists and trains.

Three new pedestrian level crossings are also being installed at key locations to improve access across the railway for local residents.

Motorists are being reminded that road rules at the crossings will change when they reopen. Drivers will be required to stop, check for approaching trains and obey all new signage before proceeding. Fines will apply for failing to comply.

The Loop Line Upgrade Project, will restore part of the historic rail corridor between Buxton and Colo Vale. The project is expected to improve the long-term sustainability of the NSW Rail Museum by supporting expanded heritage rail operations.

Transport Heritage NSW says the upgraded line will also allow new heritage rail experiences that are expected to attract visitors from across Australia and overseas.
