Wollondilly joins push for Metro to Macarthur

Camden, Campbelltown and Wollondilly councils have joined forces to demand a funded plan for a Metro connection linking Macarthur with Western Sydney International Airport.
The three councils, acting together as the Macarthur Councils, say the NSW Government should make a southern extension of the Western Sydney Airport Metro a priority and set a clear timeframe for its delivery.
Their push follows the release of government documents showing a potential Metro route from Bradfield through to Macarthur, including proposed stations at Bradfield South, Maryland, Pondicherry, Oran Park, Narellan and Mount Annan.
The documents were obtained by the NSW Opposition through a parliamentary order.
While the detailed business cases remain confidential, Transport Minister John Graham said the government would consider them and outline its position in coming months. He said the government would not commit to transport projects it could not afford.
The Australian and NSW governments have jointly funded a business case examining rail connections from Bradfield towards both Macarthur and Leppington. The Commonwealth has also committed $1 billion towards preserving future rail corridors between Leppington and Bradfield and between Bradfield and Macarthur.
The Macarthur Councils now want that planning translated into a protected corridor, funding commitment and construction pathway.
Wollondilly Mayor Matt Gould said the region could not continue adding new communities without the transport infrastructure needed to support them.
“This is about making new communities work and ensuring local people can reach the jobs being created around the airport and across Outer Western Sydney,” Cr Gould said.
“The Macarthur region and the Wollondilly Shire is growing rapidly, but the rail connection needs to keep pace.”
He said the Commonwealth’s funding meant the NSW Government now needed to make the planning and delivery decisions required to progress the project.
Camden Mayor Vince Ferreri said the three Macarthur council areas were growing rapidly and another decade of uncertainty was unacceptable.
“We need a clear delivery plan, a protected corridor and a timeframe for Macarthur Metro and we need it now,” Cr Ferreri said.
“The decisions we make now will shape how hundreds of thousands of people live, work and move around our region for generations to come.”
Camden Council has previously advocated for a southern extension of the Western Sydney Airport Metro through Oran Park and Narellan to Macarthur, while Infrastructure Australia continues to list the Bradfield-to-Leppington and Macarthur rail connections as a future infrastructure proposal.
The existing Western Sydney Airport Metro will run between St Marys and Bradfield via Western Sydney International Airport, with the proposed Macarthur extension effectively continuing the north-south line further south through the rapidly growing Camden and Campbelltown corridor.
