Welcome to the first edition of Weekend Wire for 2026, with all of your weekend events for the Southern Highlands, Tablelands and Wollondilly. We've also got a new addition to the regions this year- the Yass Valley!

SATURDAY JANUARY 3

Summer of Fun Days at Bowral Pool

The Bowral Pool is holding a free Summer of Fun event this Saturday afternoon from 12pm – 2pm (free with entrance fee) run by Wingecarribee Shire Council.

This is the first of two events, with the second scheduled for Saturday, February 8.

The event includes:

- Games and relays in the 25 metre pool (e.g musical statues, small inflatable pool races, noodle races etc.)

- A colouring in competition

- Chalk for pavement creations

- A scavenger hunt; and

- Sensory play in the toddler pool area.

A note to remember: Parents must supervise their children at all times, even though lifeguards will be on duty.

The Bowral Swimming Centre is located at 152 Mittagong Rd, Bowral (next to the Cherry Tree Walk).

500th Bowral Parkrun

A special Bowral Parkrun will be held at the Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens in East Bowral this Saturday morning from 8am.

This is officially the 500th Parkrun in Bowral over two locations since its formation on 14 May 2022, with 313 held at Briars and 187 at the SHBG.

To celebrate the special achievement, all competitors are encouraged to wear blue.

The Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens are located at 1 Old South Rd, Bowral (turn right into the car park just after the Kangaloon Rd roundabout).

Sunday Sessions at Dawning Day Cellar Door, Exeter

Get along to the first Sunday Session of the year at Dawning Day Cellar Door in Exeter this Sunday from 11am – 5:30pm.

There will be delicious pizzas and Greek Gyros on offer from Black Hen Kitchen between 11am and 3pm, live music by The Creats from 1pm – 4pm, and wine tastings across the whole day.

Vintage Train Rides, NSW Rail Museum, Thirlmere

All throughout January, the NSW Rail Museum at Thirlmere is hosting vintage train rides on rail motor CPH 18 and other diesel and steam locomotives on the 40 minute ride to Buxton and return.

The museum is also open for both families and kids with interactive exhibits and more than 10,000 metres of space with picnic tables, a play space and barbeque facilities for families to enjoy. There is also a cafe on site with coffee and snacks and much more.

Ticket prices are as follows:

Greyhounds and Harness Racing at Goulburn Recreation Area

While away an afternoon at the Goulburn Recreation Area by getting involved with either the Goulburn Greyhounds or Harness Club racing events.

The races are all held throughout the afternoon on a Friday, and if you are a punter, don’t be afraid to put a bet on any of the competitors available. But if you’re not the gambling type, still enjoy some time watching the thrill and action of the races.

There is a full licensed bar as well as TAB facilities and a café on site.

The Goulburn Recreation Area is at 47 Braidwood Rd, Goulburn.

Goulburn Parkrun, Marsden Weir

The weekly Goulburn Parkrun will be held at the usual location of Marsden Weir this Saturday morning from 8am.

The Parkrun team also held a small run on New Year’s Day, with around 61 participants taking part. One volunteer and one participant both celebrated their 100th volunteering and parkrun milestones on the day.

Crookwell Country Markets

The first Crookwell Country Markets of the year are on at the CWA Rooms in Spring St from 9am to 1pm with a huge variety of market vendors including a dog photographer, quilting, dog accessories, lady's clothing, crochet goodies, 3D goodies, soaps, bath bombs, up cycled clothing and accessories, pottery, fresh produce, flowers, and so much more.

There will also be a BBQ provided by the Heritage Railway Society as well as traditional CWA scones and other tasty goodies on offer, too.

Cellar Door Wine Tastings, Yarralaw Springs Wines, Quialigo

Get along to Yarralaw Springs Winery at Quialigo, approximately half an hour away from Goulburn (38 kms towards Windellama).

This Sunday from 11am to 4pm the winery will host a wine tasting experience as well as picnic grounds on site. Their varieties are all made on site using traditional organic practices and in a ‘strawbale’ style winery.
