A major upgrade of the Sydney to Canberra rail corridor has been identified as a national infrastructure priority.

Infrastructure Australia has listed improved Sydney–Canberra rail connectivity and capacity as an “early stage proposal” within its national Infrastructure Priority List.

The proposal has been placed in the body’s “2–4 year pipeline” and calls for governments to begin developing investment options and business cases for future upgrades.

According to Infrastructure Australia, potential works could include track realignment, duplication, electrification, signalling upgrades and new rolling stock aimed at delivering faster and more reliable rail services between Sydney and Canberra.

Infrastructure Australia said the current rail corridor plays a “significant role in Australia’s regional transport network” and argued improvements could reduce travel times, improve freight productivity and provide a stronger alternative to road and air travel.

The report also links improved rail services to housing growth around station precincts.

“Upgrades to improve rail services between Sydney and Canberra would support housing development at railway station precincts and contribute to national housing targets,” the report states.

The corridor passes through major regional centres including Goulburn and Moss Vale.

Infrastructure Australia said upgrades could improve “liveability” by increasing accessibility between the capital cities and regional centres while also supporting freight resilience and sustainability outcomes.

The proposal remains in its early planning stages and no funding commitment or final upgrade package has been announced.

Infrastructure Australia has recommended the Australian, NSW and ACT governments work together to develop investment strategies and identify possible short and medium-term upgrade packages.

Infrastructure Australia was set up by former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in 2008 to provide independent advice on infrastructure spending.

With the Federal Budget due to be handed down tomorrow night, the announcement by Infrastructure Australia gives hope to those across Southern NSW for long-awaited improvements.

The Daily Telegraph has reported that the Federal Government could announce a $50 million investment in the rail line as early as tomorrow.
