A Queensland man has been charged with a string of offences after an alleged 60-kilometre police pursuit on the Hume Highway ended with a stolen vehicle abandoned at Goulburn and the driver allegedly attempting to escape by train.

About 6.45pm on Friday 24 July 2026, officers attached to the Highway Patrol attempted to stop a station wagon allegedly travelling above the 110km/h speed limit on the Hume Highway at Bowning.

Police allege the driver failed to stop, sparking a pursuit that continued for about 60 kilometres before being terminated due to safety concerns.

A short time later, the station wagon was found abandoned in the car park of a correctional centre at Goulburn.

Police searched the vehicle and allegedly found a set of knuckle dusters, a gold necklace and other property.

Just after 8pm, officers arrested a 29-year-old Queensland man on a train at Goulburn Railway Station. Police allege he was the driver of the vehicle.

He was taken to Goulburn Police Station, where inquiries allegedly revealed the station wagon had been stolen from a Queensland address on Monday, 20 July.

Police will also allege the gold necklace and other items found inside the vehicle were stolen during a theft at a Mittagong shopping centre on Wednesday, 22 July.

The man was charged with:

  • Police pursuit – not stop – drive at speed

  • Drive conveyance taken without consent of owner

  • Possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit

  • Shoplifting (value less than or equal to $2,000)

  • Shoplifting (value more than $5,000 and less than or equal to $15,000)

  • Receive property stolen outside NSW

  • Outstanding arrest warrant

  • Licence expired within the last two years (two counts)

Police said the man was also wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant for allegedly failing to appear in court over unrelated matters.

He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 3 on Saturday, where he was formally refused bail and remanded in custody.

He is due to appear before Goulburn Local Court on Wednesday, 12 August.
