Travellers can now get online and be amongst the first to purchase tickets to fly from Sydney’s new 24-hour global gateway, Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI).

Inaugural international tickets are now on sale from Singapore Airlines.

Their inaugural services from WSI will comprise of a daily non-stop flight between Singapore and WSI, beginning on 23 November.

The service will depart Singapore at 11.30am (local time) and arrive at WSI at 10.20pm (local time).

The service will then depart WSI on the same day at 11.55pm, and arrive in Singapore at 5.05am (local time) the following morning.

The daily services will operate with Singapore Airlines’ Airbus A350-900 medium - haul aircraft, which feature 303 seats in two cabin classes - 40 in Business Class and 263 in Economy Class.

Federal Member for Macarthur, Dr. Mike Freelander, whose electorate is nearby to the WSI site, told The Southern Wire the flights will be a positive boost to the area.

“I’m very excited about Singapore Airlines opening up these flights to international destinations,” he said.

“It will make a big difference for not only travellers, but also freight operators who fly their products overseas too. The whole airport site will be good for Western Sydney – I just wish we’d done better in terms of getting the transport links right to and from the airport – it is still a fair way from Campbelltown in terms of road and rail links, and I think the Northern Rd should have had four lanes rather than two. We will now have to ‘retro-fit’ as we go along in that regard.”

State Member for Camden, Sally Quinnell, whose electorate will also benefit from the close access to the airport site said the flights will be a bonus to the region.

“It's great to see international airlines using our incredible new Western Sydney Airport, and I'm very excited to see Singapore Airlines offering flights as early as November this year,” Ms. Quinnell told The Southern Wire.

“WSI provides Camden families with a 24-hour transport hub, accessible via the new loop bus service, which passengers can join from Campbelltown station.

“This round-the-clock connection will help families travel in times that suit them, with flights departing at times not currently offered at Sydney Kingsford Smith.

“More investment into our Western Sydney Airport means not only more infrastructure, but more opportunities too, supporting economic and employment growth in our region.”

WSI CEO Simon Hickey said the flights were an historic moment for everyone who has played a role in bringing WSI to life – Australia’s first international greenfield airport in more than 50 years.

“We mark a terrific milestone moment today with our first international airline partner - Skytrax certified 5-Star carrier Singapore Airlines - now giving passengers the first opportunity to book tickets from Western Sydney International Airport (WSI),” he said.

“Not only will WSI increase aviation capacity in the Sydney basin, giving travellers more choice and flexibility on when, where and how they choose to fly – our 24-hour services will unlock new routes with Singapore Airlines for everyone across Greater Sydney to enjoy."

“Singapore Airlines will operate the daily non-stop flights from 23 November that will depart WSI just before midnight, with passengers arriving at the award-winning Changi Hub around 5 am – offering a new era of global connectivity for Sydneysiders."

“We’re delighted to be partnering with Singapore Airlines, with whom we share a deep commitment to offering our customers a safe, modern, seamless travel experience supported by the latest innovations and technologies via our state-of-the-art terminal.”

Mr. Dai Haoyu, Senior Vice President Marketing & Planning, Singapore Airlines, said the new services will deliver more choice and strengthen connectivity for the airline’s customers.

“Singapore Airlines’ services to Australia’s newest gateway at Western Sydney will deliver more choice and strengthen connectivity to this popular destination for our customers,” he said.

“Western Sydney’s late-night departure capacity will enable a seamless travel journey and connections through Singapore Changi Airport, to more than 130 global destinations served by the SIA Group.”

Some of the other destinations to open up will eventually include Bali, Bangkok, Tokyo, Shanghai, Mumbai and even London.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King also welcomed the Singapore Airlines partnership.

“Daily flights will connect Western Sydney globally, starting at the new Western Sydney International Airport and connecting to every corner of the world through Changi,” she said.

“Singapore Airlines was the first international airline to commit to fly into Western Sydney International Airport, and I’m really pleased tickets are on sale so people can start planning their next flight.”

NSW Minister for Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper said this was a significant moment for the NSW visitor economy, with Western Sydney International Airport now almost on the runway for take-off.

“This new offering is going to provide the world with direct access to one of the nation’s fastest growing visitor economies, and we look forward to welcoming the first international visitors into Western Sydney,” he said.

“The State Government’s investments are helping to realise the enormous potential of our state’s visitor economy, and this is an important milestone towards achieving our ambitious goal of $91 billion in annual visitor expenditure by 2035.”

The Southern Wire has been invited to undertake a tour of the runway of the new Western Sydney International Airport at the end of this month.
