The Australian Koala Foundation is calling on locals, schools and businesses to get involved in Save the Koala Month this September.

The annual campaign will run from September 1 to 30, encouraging Australians to raise money and awareness for koala conservation as the species continues to face pressure from habitat loss and fragmentation.

The Australian Koala Foundation said supporters could hold workplace morning teas, organise community fundraisers or run online donation campaigns, with money raised supporting its work to protect koalas and their habitat.

The campaign, which began in 1989, is one of the foundation's longest-running annual initiatives.

Australian Koala Foundation chair Deborah Tabart OAM said it was originally established to give people a practical way to contribute.

"Save the Koala Month came about when I decided there had to be a way to fundraise. Our first was 1989," Ms Tabart said.

A new event, Favourite Creature Day, will also be held on Friday, September 25, coinciding with Save the Koala Day.

Schools, workplaces and community groups are being encouraged to dress as, learn about or champion their favourite animal while raising money for koala conservation.

The foundation said the initiative was designed particularly to engage young people with wildlife and the importance of protecting natural habitat.

People can also support the campaign by adopting a koala, donating, using the foundation's educational resources or contributing to its Plant-a-Tree Program.

The Australian Koala Foundation says that protecting habitat remains central to the long-term survival of wild koala populations.
