Project a feat of modern engineering: MP

Sydney Water is currently upgrading the plant at a cost of more than $80 million to help cater for future demand.
The project will increase the plant’s water production capacity to 33 megalitres a day – the equivalent of 13 Olympic-sized swimming pools – to meet expected growth in the Wollondilly LGA for the next 30-40 years.
The new plant at Bargo – which draws from the Nepean Dam - is expected to be operational in late 2027.
One of the challenges facing the project team has been delivering the upgrade within a fully operational facility and ensuring there is minimal disruption to the supply of drinking water across the Wollondilly.
Mrs Hannan visited the project site recently to inspect the works and to “hear directly from the people delivering the project about the work involved”.
“Projects of this scale are significant feats of modern civil engineering,” Mrs Hannan said after the visit.
“Behind what we see on the surface is an enormous amount of technical expertise, precision, planning and coordination.
“Seeing that complexity firsthand gives you a real appreciation for the engineers, tradespeople, operators, project teams and everyone working together to deliver this essential infrastructure.”
Mrs Hannan said planning for Wollondilly’s growth “means getting the essential infrastructure right”.
“Water infrastructure might not always attract the headlines, but it matters enormously to our communities,” the MP said.
“As Wollondilly grows we need to be thinking ahead about the infrastructure that supports new and existing communities – water, roads, schools, health services and transport – rather than trying to catch up after growth has occurred.”
Mrs Hannan thanked Sydney Water and commended everyone else involved in the project.
“The professionalism, knowledge and pride they bring to their work is impressive and their contribution deserves to be recognised.
“These are the people turning complex plans into infrastructure that our communities will depend on for generations,” she said.
