The planned Picton Bypass has taken another significant step forward with design and assessment work now underway.

MRB Technical Services has been awarded the contract to deliver a concept design and environmental assessment for the long-awaited project.

The State and Federal Governments have committed more than $18 million for planning of the bypass.

The bypass will take traffic away from the centre of Picton, with motorists and heavy vehicles offered an alternative route linking Thirlmere and Tahmoor with the Hume Motorway via Picton Road.

A proposed bypass corridor has been identified between Remembrance Driveway, south of Wonga Road and Picton Road, and north-west of Maldon Bridge Road.

The planned two-lane, two-way bypass will provide a massive boost to safety in the Picton town centre as well as a much-needed alternative access route through the area during times of flooding and fire.

A concept design is expected to be available for public comment late next year (2026).

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said early planning was a “critical step” in a project such as this.

She said it would enable local residents to “finally see what a bypass would mean for their community and how it would improve safety, reduce congestion and strengthen resilience during emergencies”.

She said the project reflected the Federal Government’s commitment to “better, safer and more reliable connections for communities right across Australia”.

NSW Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison said the “essential” planning work was needed to ensure the “best outcome and design for communities in the area and the local environment”.

Member for Wollondilly Judy Hannan – who has been a persistent advocate for the bypass – said it was “positive” to see design work underway.

“I know how important this project is for families, local businesses and emergency services,” Mrs Hannan said, adding that she would continue to advocate for the “best outcome” for the community.

Wollondilly mayor Matt Gould said he was pleased to see the State and Federal Governments had acknowledged the importance of the project to the local community and had moved into the formal planning phase

“The bypass is something we have been strongly advocating for over many years and it is becoming more urgent with the increased traffic through Picton’s main street due to the impact of nearby growth areas and Wollondilly’s contribution to housing supply,” Cr Gould said.

He thanked Judy Hannan and everyone else who had been advocating for the project.

Cr Gould said full funding for the project would now remain a major priority.

Transport for NSW announced in late September that it was undertaking ground investigations to help with design and construction planning for the bypass.

The investigations along Remembrance Driveway and Picton Road are expected to continue through until the end of the year.

MRB Technical Services has undertaken design work on several key projects across NSW including the New Richmond Bridge Stage 1 and The Horsely Drive.
