Paid parking? Council launches major Bowral parking review
The future of parking in Bowral and Mittagong is under review, with Wingecarribee Shire Council commissioning a major review that will examine everything from parking restrictions and parking technology to digital payment systems.

The future of parking in Bowral and Mittagong is under review, with Wingecarribee Shire Council commissioning a major review that will examine everything from parking restrictions and parking technology to digital payment systems.
While no decision has been made to introduce paid parking, the consultant appointed by Council will investigate a wide range of parking management options as part of the review, including demand management, digital payment systems and short, medium and long-term solutions.
The review has been prompted by growing pressure on parking and expected population growth, with Council forecasting the Wingecarribee population will increase from around 53,000 residents to more than 70,000 by 2046.
Consultants have been asked to prepare a comprehensive parking strategy examining current parking demand, future growth, parking supply, accessibility, active transport, electric vehicle infrastructure and future parking needs. Importantly, the appointed consultant will be required to report on 'digital payment systems.'
The strategy will build on a number of existing Council planning documents.
The Bowral Town Centre Master Plan recommends investigating timed on-street and off-street parking, improving parking management and considering a future multi-storey car park in the Station Street precinct.
Council's Integrated Transport Strategy also recommends encouraging long-stay parking outside busy shopping areas to free up spaces for shoppers, while investigating parking monitoring technology and improved wayfinding to help motorists find available parking.
Moss Vale has been excluded from the review because Transport for NSW is already undertaking separate transport planning work for the township.
As part of the project, consultants will survey public and private parking, consult with Transport for NSW and other key stakeholders, and prepare recommendations to guide future Council decisions.
A draft strategy is expected in early 2027 before a final report is delivered in May next year.
