Two local manufacturing plants are confident they can minimise the impact of a rail shutdown on their on-going operations.

As reported by The Southern Wire yesterday, the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) has suspended the accreditation of Holdco Holdings – trading as Southern Shorthaul Railroad (SSR) – following a ‘series’ of incidents including a derailment at New Berrima on Saturday.

ONRSR said the decision had been made “based on a determination that there is, or would be, an immediate or serious risk to safety unless Holdco’s accreditation was suspended”.

“The suspension follows a serious incident at Berrima in New South Wales on 4 July 2026 in which several wagons rolled away and derailed at a level crossing on a public road,” an ONRSR spokesperson said.

Investigations into the incident are continuing and no timeframe has been given for the completion of those investigations or when SSR may be likely to regain its accreditation.

A spokesperson for Boral concrete said there would be minimal impact on the plant’s operations.

“We have an extensive logistics and fleet team and we’re working with partners and suppliers to deploy different logistics modes,” the spokesperson said.

“When coupled with our careful management of inventory throughout the supply chain, we are very confident in our ability to meet the demand of our customers.

“Our teams are operating as normal.”

The Boral plant produces 60 per cent of the cement used in NSW each year.

Inghams Enterprises Pty Ltd – which operates a feed mill in Berrima – has also said there will be “no operational impact” as a result of the ONRSR decision and that it would “continue to supply as usual to our customers”

The spokesperson said the facility would continue to operate as usual and there would be no impact on employment.

The facility produces chicken feed for the Inghams Poultry Group.
