EnergyAustralia has released its first renderings of a proposed gas-fired power station near Marulan as part of its “commitment to open dialogue” with the community.

It says the visual renderings represent an “exciting milestone” in the project and will help reduce uncertainty by showing people how the power station will integrate into its surroundings.

EnergyAustralia says it is working to protect the visual character of the area through “thoughtful design, natural screening and transparent engagement”.

The proposed power station will be located near the Transgrid Switchyard on Canyonleigh Road. The area is already home to existing and planned infrastructure including the Wattle Creek Solar Farm and Battery.

EnergyAustralia says the project will have minimal visual impact and most nearby properties will not have any direct view of the power station.

A small number of people may see the tops of the 40-metre gas turbine stacks but they will be no taller than the existing 40m-50m transmission towers in the area.

Night-time lighting will be kept to a minimum.

EnergyAustralia is now inviting comment on the renderings and says community feedback will help shape the project moving forward.

A scoping report for the project was submitted to the NSW Government in August this year and EnergyAustralia is now proceeding with technical and environmental studies to support a modification report.

Development approval for the power station has already been granted however EnergyAustralia is seeking to modify the proposal “to align the project with today’s environmental and energy standards”.

EnergyAustralia says gas plays a vital role in the renewable energy transition and a new, modern energy system. It says the proposed Marulan power station could respond quickly to fluctuations in electricity supply and demand, providing security of supply for a large number of households and businesses.

It says the modifications would double the power station’s capacity from 700MW to 1.43 gigawatts (1430MW).

The project would create more than 300 jobs during construction with EnergyAustralia planning to build a temporary accommodation village for workers near the site to help minimise the impact on local housing and infrastructure.

Local residents have raised a number of concerns relating to the project including visual impacts, air quality, noise, traffic and water-use.

Residents have also asked for more information on how the project will impact on local biodiversity – including wildlife and the Wollondilly River – and how those impacts will be managed.
