The new Warradale Men’s Shed is a step closer to reality.

Just five months after being approved by Wollondilly’s Local Planning Panel (LPP), the first sod on the construction site in Marsh Road, Silverdale was turned this week.

Guests included Member for Wollondilly Judy Hannan, Wollondilly mayor Matt Gould and Wollondilly Council’s chief executive officer Ben Taylor as well as members of the local community and ‘shedders’.

The shed is being built on council-owned land at 85 Marsh Road at a projected cost of just over $400,000 and will include a workshop, office, amenities and associated infrastructure including nine on-site carparking spaces.

It will continue to provide a valuable community resource supporting the health and well-being of Wollondilly’s ageing population – particularly in the Warragamba/Silverdale area.

The Warradale Men’s Shed had been operating for many years on land owned by the Warragamba Workers and Social Club but was forced to a look for a new home after the club decided to take possession of the land and release it for sale.

The Marsh Road site was considered the most suitable because of permissibility of use, availability of sewerage, reasonable construction costs, its reasonably large size and “the synergy it offers by being situated near another local volunteer organisation – the Silverdale Rural Fire Brigade”.

Mrs Hannan said the Warradale Men’s Shed was one of the first in Wollondilly and was started by “a few local men” who wanted more than to just hang out in a pub and to talk other blokes.

“It went from a temporary meeting in the local townhall to the provision of a donated fire shed on what turned out to be a temporary site to where we are now,” she said.

The group has been operating from what was the old Thirlmere Rural Fire Service Shed – which was picked up by council and delivered to Warragamba where the Men’s Shed has been operating for years.

Mrs Hannan said she had worked as a councillor to help find a new location and joined a collective “sigh of relief” after her election as Wollondilly MP when a community grant application for a new shed was successful.

She said there had been “many hills” to climb along the way but the sod-turning had finally eventuated.

Mrs Hannan made special mention of two men – Terry Atkins and Michael Davis – who had “worked so hard to get this new shed off the ground”.

“I know Michael and Terry will be looking down on all of this saying, ‘It’s about time,” she said.
