Construction has begun on a major $31 million upgrade of the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute (EMAI) at Menangle, with the NSW Government describing the facility as critical to protecting Australia’s farming and biosecurity systems.

The world-class research facility will receive major new laboratories, greenhouse upgrades and expanded biosecurity infrastructure.

Among the biggest projects is a new $15 million high-containment insectary designed to strengthen responses to damaging insect and mite pests threatening agriculture and the environment.

The Menangle facility also received:

  • $6.5 million to upgrade greenhouse research facilities

  • $4.8 million to expand animal research infrastructure

  • $4.7 million for broader laboratory and campus upgrades.

EMAI scientists had recently contributed to major biosecurity breakthroughs including work involving foot-and-mouth disease vaccines, Japanese encephalitis virus detection, varroa mite responses and exotic pest identification.

The Critical Infrastructure Uplift Program was established under the former Coalition Government, with the Minns Labor Government now delivering and expanding projects funded under the program.
