Koalas, community have Sue to thank for making a difference
Sue Gay made a difference – and the region’s koala population have her to thank for her perseverance.
Sue Gay made a difference – and the region’s koala population have her to thank for her perseverance.
Sue passed away late last month.
Member for Wollondilly Judy Hannan described Sue as “the loyalist, feistiest and most wonderful woman I have met in all my years in local and state government”.
Kind words for a woman who dedicated so much of her time to her family, the region’s struggling koala population and to her community.
“Sue fought for what she knew was right,” Mrs Hannan told The Southern Wire.
“She protected the koalas, loved her family and ran strong campaigns.
“She will be missed by all and I will miss her wicked laugh and beautiful blue eyes.”
Save Sydney’s Koalas posted on Facebook saying the group was “heartbroken” to learn of the death of one of its founding members and a passionate community advocate.
“Sue spent her life fiercely protecting the community, the landscape, flora and fauna she treasured.
“No-one fought harder or more extensively to protect the Appin and Campbelltown koala population from urban expansion.
“At times this caused her to be personally affected but she refused to be intimidated.
“Instead to the end she called out injustice.”
The organisation said it had won some David and Goliath battles and had left behind a massive legacy and a stronger community.
