Wollondilly Shire Council has publicly acknowledged the work of local volunteer Ken Day with Mayor Matt Gould saying it would be impossible to put a value on the work he does in local cemeteries.

Mr Day works as a volunteer for the Find a Grave website and spends his spare time in local cemeteries photographing headstones and uploading them to the site.

He is in regular contact with council to confirm plot locations and is currently working his way through the entire Anglican section at Thirlmere Cemetery. Databases have been established to assist with the accuracy of collated information.

Cr Gould moved a Mayoral Minute at council’s October meeting thanking Mr Day for his hard work and dedication.

He said the Find a Grave website currently shows that 2240 grave locations have been located in Thirlmere Cemetery including columbarium walls, memorial trees and unmarked plots.

Almost all of them have been photographed and come with links to Google Maps and GPS coordinates.

Find a Grave can be found at www.findagrave.com and is recognised as the world's largest gravesite collection.
