Hume Highway works ahead of schedule – but there’s more pain on the way
Transport for NSW has advised that works on the Hume Highway near Marulan are ahead of schedule and will be completed earlier than expected.

Transport for NSW has advised that works on the Hume Highway near Marulan are ahead of schedule and will be completed earlier than expected.
The news will come as cold comfort to Marulan businesses and residents who have suffered through weeks of disruption.
Motorists have also taken to social media in their hundreds to voice anger and frustration over delays on the Hume Highway, with some claiming to have been stuck in bumper- to-bumper traffic for hours.
And there’s more disruption on the way with more roadworks planned for the northbound lanes in February next year.
Two additional rounds of works are being planned for mid to late 2026.
As previously reported by The Southern Wire, Transport for NSW has been replacing concrete slabs in the southbound lanes near Marulan with high-strength asphalt.
The work commenced on November 10 and was originally expected to continue through until December 18.
Transport for NSW has advised the work has followed an “accelerated schedule” with crews “working day and night to minimise disruption for local residents, businesses and through traffic”.
It says the work will now be completed this week – presumably between December 8 and 12 – a few days earlier than expected.
Goulburn-Mulwaree councillor Daniel Strickland has described the update as “very welcome news indeed” but Marulan businesses will say the damage has already been done.
“Temporary lane closures and reduced speed limits will remain in place until work is finished,” Transport for NSW has said in a statement.
“Access into Marulan town centre from the south will be reopened as soon as work is completed, providing earlier relief for local residents and businesses.
“We thank the Marulan community for its patience and understanding while we work to improve safety and reliability on one of the state’s most important freight and passenger routes,” Transport for NSW said.
Marulan businesses have consistently said they are not opposed to road improvements – but claim the latest works commenced with little notice and at the worst possible time of the year.
Transport for NSW has now advised that the next stage of works will commence in February next year and will involve works in the northbound lanes of the Hume Highway between Marulan South Road and Highland Way.
This stage of works will take approximately six weeks to complete, weather permitting, and access to Marulan will remain open in all directions.
However contraflow traffic management will be in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Two additional rounds of work are being planned for “mid to late 2026” although Transport for NSW has said there will be “no impacts to Marulan town access” as a result of these works and that “more information will be planned with the community in 2026 as our planning progresses”.
