Holiday motorists encouraged to plan ahead and drive to conditions
Local families planning a trip away over the coming winter school holidays are being urged to slow down and drive to conditions.

Local families planning a trip away over the coming winter school holidays are being urged to slow down and drive to conditions.
The holidays will commence this weekend with heavy traffic expected on key routes including the Snowy Mountains, the Blue Mountains, the Hume Highway at Pheasants Nest, the Pacific Highway at Coffs Harbour and the Pacific Motorway at Tugun, heading into Queensland.
Transport for NSW Executive Director Rob Austin is also urging motorists to plan ahead.
“Just as we ask motorists all the time before jumping in the car - plan ahead and drive to the conditions with parts of the state expecting severe weather.
“Slow down, maintain safe following distances and always use headlights,” Mr Austin said.
“Despite the lack of snow to date, we especially want people to take extra care if travelling through the alpine region - carry and fit snow chains as a precaution as roads can still be icy, while some snow and fog can make it harder to see.
Travellers are also reminded that the Snowy Mountains Bus Service provides a convenient connection between Cooma, Berridale and Jindabyne with Perisher and Thredbo and the Skitube at Bullocks Flat.
“The service lets skiers, snowboarders and day-trippers skip alpine driving.
“Tickets also include entry to Kosciuszko National Park.
“If you are heading to Sydney Airport, give yourself extra travel time and consider taking the train to avoid traffic near the terminals. If you must drive and plan to leave your car at the airport, pre-book parking ahead of time,” Mr Austin said. Local motorists travelling to the Blue Mountains and beyond reminded that Great Western Highway remains closed at Victoria Pass between Mount Victoria and Little Hartley.
All highway traffic between Mount Victoria and Lithgow is detoured via the Darling Causeway and Chifley Road.
A solution has been identified but the road is not expected to re-open until later in the year. For more information go to Victoria Pass road closure on the Great Western Highway | Transport for NSW
