Don’t be alarmed if you see smoke coming from the Mt Gibraltar area today – it’s just a hazard reduction burn.

The ‘important’ hazard reduction burn is being undertaken by Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters with the support of the NSW Rural Fire Service.

The burn will take place in an area of approximately 3.7 hectares in the vicinity of Oxley Drive.

Residents in the immediate area – including those in Mittagong and Bowral – are likely to see and smell smoke for the duration of the burn.

According to the NSW Rural Fire Service, hazard reduction is one way of preparing for bushfires – but doesn’t remove the threat of bushfire or the need for homeowners to be prepared.

Residents in the immediate vicinity area of a hazard reduction burn are advised to:

· Close doors and windows to avoid smoke from entering homes;

· Cover outdoor furniture to prevent ember damage;

· Retract pool covers to prevent ember damage;

· Remove washing from clotheslines;

· Ensure pets have a protected area.

Motorists travelling in the vicinity of a hazard reduction burn are advised to slow down, to turn on their headlights and wind up their car windows. Sightseers are advised to keep away from burns for their own safety.

People who suffer from asthma or a lung condition are advised to reduce outdoor activities and to seek medical advice if they start coughing or develop shortness of breath.
