Wollondilly Shire Council will receive more than $250,000 for ‘urban greening’ projects in Tahmoor.

The funding – under the NSW Government’s ‘Greening our City’ program – was announced today (Friday).

Council will receive $57,508 for the ‘Connecting Canopy, Water and Biodiversity’ project at Tahmoor Sportsground and a further $198,700 for the ‘Greening Tahmoor Park’ project’.

The Tahmoor Park project will see the area significantly greened with a carefully designed plan featuring local species.

The NSW Government said the ‘Greening our City’ program was designed transform streets, parks and public spaces into cooler, greener environments.

“We’re supporting councils to grow tree canopy cover, help reduce urban heat and boost biodiversity so neighbourhoods are more liveable and climate resilient,” a spokesperson said.

Ten million dollars was delivered in the latest round of funding for 28 projects across the Greater Sydney region as well as the Illawarra-Shoalhaven, Hunter and Central Coast.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said the latest found of funding would deliver 24,000 new trees – 6000 more trees than in New York’s Central Park.

Mr Scully said the funding would help deliver “beautiful public spaces where people can relax and play”.

Critically, he said, it would help reduce urban heat, thereby creating cooler and more liveable communities.

“Each of these grants will make our towns and cities cooler, greener and more enjoyable places to live, work and travel,” he said.
