Driver killed after alleged swerve into truck at Appin
A critical incident investigation has been launched after a driver died in a crash involving a hatchback and a truck at Appin this morning (Wednesday).
A critical incident investigation has been launched after a driver died in a crash involving a hatchback and a truck at Appin this morning (Wednesday).
Emergency services were called to Appin Road about 10am following reports of the crash.
NSW Police said officers attached to Campbelltown City Police Area Command were responding to an urgent, unrelated incident under lights and sirens at the time.
According to police, dashcam footage shows two police vehicles travelling at least 50 metres behind a hatchback on a long, straight section of road.
Police allege the hatchback driver suddenly swerved onto the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with an oncoming truck.
The hatchback driver died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.
The truck driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Campbelltown Hospital for mandatory testing.
Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
A crime scene has been established and a Critical Incident Team from Cumberland Police Area Command will investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, with assistance from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit.
As is standard procedure for incidents involving police, the investigation will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
