Drivers are being reminded that double demerits will be in place this coming King’s Birthday long weekend.

Double demerits will apply to a number of offences from 12.01am on Friday (June 5) through until 11.59pm on Monday (June 8).

The double demerit scheme applies to speeding, illegal use of mobile phones, seatbelt offences and riding without a helmet.

School zones will be in operation on Friday and additional penalties can apply for certain offences committed in school zones.

Drivers and riders start with zero demerit points but can face loss of licence for serious offences during a double demerit period – particularly if they have already accumulated demerit points.

Mobile phone offences typically accrue five demerit points – increasing to 10 demerit points during the double demerit period.

Seatbelt offences increase from three demerit points to six demerit points.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said the demerit provided an incentive for drivers to improve their driving behaviour, obey the road rules and comply with NSW traffic laws.
