The NSW Department of Health has expanded its crackdown on tobacconists, ordering further closures across the Southern Highlands and Southern Tablelands.

The latest action follows the closures we reported on last week, with additional shops now shut in Bowral, Marulan and Goulburn.

In Bowral, the store trading as ‘Vapes and Cigarettes Pty Ltd’ at 10/47 Bowral Street has been closed for 90 days.

Authorities allege the business was involved in the sale of illicit tobacco and the retail sale of tobacco or vaping products without a valid licence.

The closure brings the total number of shops currently shut in the Southern Highlands to four.

In Marulan, ‘TMT Tobacconist’ has been ordered to close until 20 June over similar alleged breaches, including the sale of illicit tobacco and operating without a retail licence.

In Goulburn, two stores have been shut.

Sawa Convenience Store and Tobacconist at 249–251 Auburn Street has been closed until 21 June for the alleged sale of illicit tobacco and vaping goods.

A second business, Goulburn Tobacconist at 117 Auburn Street, has also been shut until 21 June over the alleged sale of illicit tobacco.

The latest closures extend the enforcement action beyond the Southern Highlands into the Southern Tablelands, with health authorities continuing inspections across the region.

The reaction to last week’s article drew a strong community response, with readers broadly supporting the crackdown.

Comments included calls for tougher enforcement and questions about how such businesses were operating, including whether planning or zoning rules should be tightened.

The NSW Department of Health has increased compliance activity targeting the sale of illicit tobacco and vaping products, with further inspections expected.
