Council backs local business
Wollondilly Shire Council will investigate ways to make it easier for local businesses to win Council work after endorsing a proposal to explore a Strategic Local Procurement Framework.

Wollondilly Shire Council will investigate ways to make it easier for local businesses to win Council work after endorsing a proposal to explore a Strategic Local Procurement Framework.
Councillors voted at Tuesday night's meeting to support a recommendation from the Tourism and Local Jobs Strategic Reference Group to examine how Council can improve access to procurement opportunities for businesses within the shire.
Council staff will now prepare a report over the next nine months on the possible development of a framework that identifies opportunities to increase local business participation while remaining compliant with procurement legislation and existing Council requirements.
The report will consider whether local economic benefits can be factored into value-for-money assessments, examine how other councils approach local procurement policies and investigate ways procurement opportunities can be better communicated to local businesses.
Mayor Matt Gould said the proposal, developed by the Tourism and Local Jobs Strategic Reference Group chaired by Cr Ally Dench, aimed to help local businesses better understand and pursue opportunities to work with Council.
"When it comes to Council purchasing goods and services or engaging contractors for construction or project work, it is important that we achieve the best value for our ratepayers and follow the legal frameworks that are in place," he said.
"Engaging with our local businesses and helping them make the most of opportunities as they arise should help stimulate economic growth, retain local jobs, and support businesses within the Shire."
The findings and any recommendations are expected to be presented back to Council within nine months.
