Concern over major projects prompts community meeting in Marulan

Marulan residents will meet this weekend as concerns grow over a number of major projects proposed for the area.
Those projects include a gas-fired power station in Canyonleigh Road and a quarry in Carrick.
Saturday’s meeting is being organised by the newly formed Marulan and District Action Group and will be held at the Marulan Community Hall commencing at 10am.
Goulburn-Mulwaree mayor Nina Dillon will be an apology but The Southern Wire has been told that other council representatives will be in attendance.
Member for Goulburn Wendy Tuckerman will also be attending.
A spokesperson for the Marulan and District Action Group said there was growing concern in the community about the number of State Significant Developments (SSDs) proposed for the region.
The Marulan Gas Fired Power Station Project – being proposed by EnergyAustralia – would consist of two adjacent gas fired power stations sharing common infrastructure on Canyonleigh Road approximately 12 kilometres northeast of Marulan.
EnergyAustralia says the project is “critical to the economic and social needs of NSW”.
It says the plant will provide “fast-start, dispatchable electricity generation that supports the clean energy transition away from coal-fired electricity generation while retaining energy security and affordability”.
Approval has already been granted for the two power stations but Energy Australia is currently seeking to modify those approvals – primarily to significantly increase their combined capacity.
A scoping report currently on exhibition says the project will employ up to 400 people during construction with workers to be accommodated in temporary facilities to minimise the impact on local housing and infrastructure.
A suitable site for those facilities is yet to be found.
EnergyAustralia says it has been “proactively working with the community and stakeholders to advise them about the modified project, provide opportunities to input into the project’s development and build community relationships”.
Public submissions on the proposed modified project will close on November 12 and can be made via the NSW Government’s major projects portal at www.planningportal.nsw.gov.au
As reported by The Southern Wire, Cleary Bros (Bombo) Ltd has lodged an SSD application for a new quarry at Carrick with plans to extract and process up to one million tonnes of hard rock per annum over a period of 30 years.
The proposed site for the quarry – approximately 5.5 kilometres northwest of Marulan on the ‘Lockyersleigh’ property on Carrick Road – has been chosen because of the region’s distinct geology.
It is also expected to provide the best resource closest to Cleary Bros’ predominantly east coast market.
Local residents believe it will lead to a loss of rural amenity and property values and a reduced quality of life due to the “cumulative industrialisation” of the Marulan-Brayton area.
Submissions on the quarry proposal will close on November 11.
