Children’s play sand sold locally through The Reject Shop has been pulled from the shelves after testing detected traces of asbestos.

The recall affects HTI “Scented Fun Sand” products sold in blue, green, red and yellow colours between January 13, 2025 and May 7, 2026.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission undertook laboratory testing which detected traces of anthophyllite asbestos and tremolite asbestos in some samples.

Consumers have been warned to stop using the product immediately.

The ACCC said the contaminated sand “may cause a risk to health” due to the presence of asbestos, which is a prohibited substance in Australia.

The products were sold nationally and carried TRS code 30143969.

The sand which was marketed as "smells sooooooo good!" was made in China.
