A major boost to frontline policing is on the way, with 349 new probationary constables sworn into the NSW Police Force.

The recruits, part of Class 368, will begin work on Monday.

Across the Southern Region, 31 new officers will be allocated, including three to the Hume Police District, which covers much of our readership area.

The class is the largest to graduate in 13 years, reflecting a push to rebuild police numbers across the state.

The new recruits range in age from 19 to 46 and come from diverse backgrounds, including 20 First Nations officers and 39 born overseas.

They will spend the next 12 months on the job completing training before being confirmed as constables.

Also graduating alongside the officers are six police dogs, including three drug detection dogs named Horrace, Bachar and Quattro, and three general purpose dogs named Evie, Charger and Pride.

Nine police cadets have also begun training, the first intake of cadets since 1977, and will be placed in Sydney commands for the next 12 months.

The intake also marks a transition, with this being the final class trained in partnership with Charles Sturt University before the program moves to Western Sydney University.
