Nearly 200,000 hot cross buns have already been sold across our readership area, as locals get a head start on Easter.
A Coles spokesperson told The Southern Wire that hot cross buns remain a firm Easter favourite locally, with “strong demand across the Southern Highlands and Tablelands”.
The spokesperson confirmed more than 200,000 hot cross buns have been sold in the lead-up to Easter.
Across New South Wales, more than nine million buns have already been sold, with more than 55 million expected to be purchased nationally before Easter.
While sales are strong locally, new figures also show a shift in how Australians are eating them.
The microwave has edged out the toaster as the preferred way to heat hot cross buns, with 32 per cent opting for a zap compared to 29 per cent using a toaster.
A further quarter of consumers are not heating them at all, eating them straight from the packet.
Traditional fruit buns remain the most popular, accounting for 40 per cent of sales, while chocolate varieties continue to gain ground.
