Yass Valley will receive more than $2.6 million for new and upgraded walking and cycling infrastructure, including a major two-kilometre path through Yass and a new shared path at Murrumbateman.

Yass Valley Council has secured funding for three projects through the NSW Government's Get NSW Active program, with the grants covering 100 per cent of the project costs.

The largest allocation is $1.88 million for the Laidlaw Street footpath project, which will provide a combination of new and upgraded paths between Hume Bridge and the Yass Community Centre.

The project will cover about two kilometres and is designed to improve connections and accessibility through Yass.

Murrumbateman will receive $765,000 for a shared path between West Street and Rose Street.

Council said the project would fill a missing link in the existing path network and respond to community concerns about the safety of children travelling to and from Murrumbateman Public School.

A further $50,000 has been allocated to an Active Routes to School project at Murrumbateman Public School.

Students will be involved in mapping and promoting safer routes for walking, wheeling and riding to school.

Yass Valley Mayor Jasmin Jones said the projects would provide safer and better connections for residents.

“These projects will make it easier for people to choose active transport for everyday trips, whether that means walking to school, riding to a community facility or simply enjoying a safer connection through town,” Cr Jones said.

The three grants total $2,696,514.80.

Council will formally consider accepting the funding at its meeting on Thursday, August 27.
