Yass Rail Trail plans open for feedback as project moves toward funding
Plans for a 4.5 kilometre walking and cycling trail linking Yass Junction to the Yass town centre have been released.

Plans for a 4.5 kilometre walking and cycling trail linking Yass Junction to the Yass town centre have been released, with the community now being asked to have their say before the project moves toward funding.
The proposed Yass Rail Trail would transform the disused tramway corridor, which closed in 1988, into a shared recreational path connecting the railway station, town centre and key heritage sites.
The route would run from Yass Junction Railway Station through bushland, cross the Yass River via a heritage-listed steel bridge built in 1892, and continue along Dutton Street to the Yass Railway Museum.
Council has confirmed the project has progressed through feasibility and detailed design stages, with consultation now underway before the next phase focused on securing funding and construction.
The design includes a sealed pathway suitable for walking and cycling, with proposed features such as lighting, picnic areas, drinking fountains and interpretive signage highlighting local history, including Ngunnawal cultural connections.

Mayor Jasmin Jones said the project would create a new recreational link between the junction and town, offering a scenic route through heritage and natural landscapes.
The Mayor said the trail could take residents from the Crago Mill precinct past the railway museum and along the river before crossing the historic bridge and continuing to Yass Junction.
Council is also keeping open the possibility of a future tourist tram, with the design allowing for a potential line to be installed along part of the corridor.
Residents are being encouraged to review the detailed design plans and provide feedback, with submissions open until 5pm on 24 April.
Council has advised that all submissions will be considered as part of a future report, with personal details to be removed before publication.
Consultation will also include direct contact with properties along the corridor, a councillor workshop and a community pop-up session outside the Memorial Hall.
The project will now hinge on securing funding, with construction to follow if approved.
