Yass on the National Stage
Rare collection earns “nationally significant” status as new exhibition opens

The Yass Valley History Centre is stepping into the national spotlight — unveiling a collection now officially recognised as nationally significant in a new exhibition titled National Treasures, Local Stories.
The exclusive launch will take place Thursday 6 November 2025 at 5.30 pm, led by Ben Maguire AM — co-host of the veterans’ equine program Remount, former Chair of the National Museum of Australia, and past CEO of the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame.
Goulburn MP Wendy Tuckerman will also take part, before doors open to the public on Sunday 9 November.
Founded in 1961, the History Centre has spent six decades collecting photographs, records and artefacts that tell the story of Yass Valley’s people and industries. A new professional assessment confirms the collection meets national heritage criteria — elevating it among Australia’s most valuable community-held archives.
“This recognition is not just about the History Centre — it’s about the shared history of the Yass Valley and the way our stories contribute to Australia’s broader national narrative,” said Sheree Bamforth, Publicity Officer.
“It marks an important milestone for the whole community, strengthening Yass Valley’s place as a key regional cultural destination and opening new opportunities for heritage-based tourism.”
The Exhibition will include:
Eleven key archival collections on display
Stories of innovation, endurance and community identity
The Centre’s first online exhibition, offering extended content, images and audio for audiences beyond the region
