Work has been completed on $11 million worth of safety improvements along Burley Griffin Way at Goondah.
The improvements – which have been carried out over the past 12 months – have included road widening and vegetation removal to improve visibility.
Other works included the installation of 4.5 kilometres of safety barriers to reduce trauma from run-off-road crashes and audio-tactile line marking (also known as rumble strips) to alert drivers when they travel outside their lane.
The project – delivered as part of the Australian and NSW Governments’ Road Safety Program, aimed at reducing road trauma – also involved drainage improvements and the construction of a dedicated right turn lane into Goondah Road to make it safer for motorists exiting the highway.
Labor spokesperson for Goulburn, Bob Nanva MLC, described Burley Griffin Way as an important freight corridor linking the Hume Highway to the Riverina and the Olympic and Newell Highways.
He said the improvements would reduce the frequency and risk of fatal and serious injury crashes.
He said the wider shoulders would provide an increased level of protection while safety barriers have been shown to reduce the severity of high-risk crashes by up to 95 per cent.
“Safer roads benefit everyone – including local families, local businesses and transport workers too,” Mr Nanva said.
“These are the kinds of practical upgrades that make a real difference for regional communities, freight operators and everyone who relies on Burley Griffin Way.”
