Moss Vale Tobacconist & Gifts, at 466 Argyle Street, and King of the Pack Moss Vale, at 308 Argyle Street, became subject to short-term closure orders on August 21.
Both premises are closed until November 18.
NSW Health advises that the sale of illicit tobacco and illicit vaping goods forced the order against Moss Vale Tobacconist & Gifts, while King of the Pack Moss Vale was closed over the sale of illicit vaping goods.
The orders mean no products can be sold from either premises during the closure period.
The latest action adds two more Southern Highlands businesses to a growing statewide list of tobacconists and convenience stores shut under powers introduced in November 2025.
It is not just the owner of the businesses that face sanctions; an owner of premises who knowingly allows illicit tobacco or vaping sales can now face up to one year in prison, a $165,000 fine, or both.
Meanwhile, a NSW parliamentary inquiry has concluded that there is no clear evidence that enforcement and regulation alone will meaningfully reduce the illicit tobacco market.
Its report, tabled on August 20, recommended more compliance officers and enforcement resources, particularly in regional communities. It also called for regular assessments of whether the laws are reducing the number of retailers selling illegal products.
The committee made 11 recommendations spanning enforcement, regulation, public education and Commonwealth support. Its more contentious proposals included asking the federal government to reduce tobacco excise and reviewing restrictions on vape sales.
