Thoughts are not enough when it comes to domestic violence
A local organisation is urging Southern Highlands residents to “stand together as a community” in the fight against domestic violence.
A local organisation is urging Southern Highlands residents to “stand together as a community” in the fight against domestic violence.
Pop In issued a statement this week after the deaths of three NSW women last Saturday in separate alleged domestic violence-related incidents.
“Three women. Three families. Three communities now living with unimaginable loss,” the statement read.
“They were aged 23, 70 and 90. Their ages remind us of something we cannot ignore - domestic violence and abuse can affect women at any age, in every community, and behind any door.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of these three women and extend our thoughts to their families, loved ones and communities.”
In a separate incident in the Blue Mountains, three children were stabbed in another alleged domestic violence incident.
One child died at the scene and a second has since passed away in hospital.
Pop In said its thoughts were with the family “and everyone affected by this devastating event”.
“But thoughts alone are not enough. We need to stand together as a community.
“We need to recognise the signs, believe women, support those experiencing abuse and work together to prevent domestic violence and abuse by challenging harmful attitudes and educating young people.
“Every woman and every child deserves to feel safe,” the group said.
Pop In provides free, wraparound support to women and children, supporting clients through the practical, emotional and legal complexities that can come with domestic violence.
This includes long-term casework, safety planning and risk assessments, assistance navigating police and court processes, housing support, connections to legal and specialist services and practical support through Pop In's pantry and community programs.
Alongside its direct support services, Pop In also works to educate, advocate and raise awareness about domestic violence and abuse within the local community.
This November, the organisation will provide the Wingecarribee community with another opportunity to come together through Beyond the Silence – Light the Night.
