Ten years battling for ‘bingos’ as Scrabble club celebrates 10th birthday
For the uninitiated, a ‘bingo’ is the ultimate Scrabble play – a seven-letter word earning an automatic 50-point bonus and, in some cases, an almost certain victory.

Members of the Bowral Scrabble Club have been battling for ‘bingos’ now for 10 years.
For the uninitiated, a ‘bingo’ is the ultimate Scrabble play – a seven-letter word earning an automatic 50-point bonus and, in some cases, an almost certain victory.
The club – which is affiliated with the NSW Scrabble Association – celebrated the anniversary with a cake and some reminiscing at its April meeting.
The club meets in Bowral every second Friday and caters for players of all ages and abilities.
Its oldest member, 91-year-old Miriam Dwyer, is one of its most competitive and has scored the most number of ‘bingos’ nearly every year over the 10 past years.
People can come and go as they please with some players staying for one or two games and others settling in for the entire day.
Free tea and coffee is on offer but there’s a $3 cost per player to cover affiliation costs.
And whilst there’s no doubt some members are extremely competitive – others are there as much for a laugh and a chance to socialise.
Scrabble – invented by American architect Alfred Mosher in 1931 – is still considered one of the most popular board games in the world nearly 100 years on.
