Sydney Trains will meet with Exeter residents in early November to discuss proposed changes to the Exeter Railway Station.

As reported by The Southern Wire, Sydney Trains is planning to undertake major works at the station to address safety issues.

Those works will include the complete reconstruction of the two existing platforms and the removal of 15 large trees.

Member for Goulburn Wendy Tuckerman said she had raised a number of concerns with the State Government relating to tree removal, the impact of the proposed works on the station’s heritage character and the consultation process surrounding the project.

She said she had been advised by the Minister for Regional Transport that Sydney Trains would meet with the Exeter Village Association (EVA) to discuss community concerns and to answer questions about the project.

Mrs Tuckerman said she had also been advised that Sydney Trains would be working with Wingecarribee Shire Council to coordinate station upgrade works with other infrastructure improvements planned for the precinct.

Council has received State Government funding to upgrade the intersection of Badgerys Way, Bundanoon Road, Middle Road and Exeter Road.

The works will include new pedestrian crossings, lighting, footpaths, kerb and gutter, drainage improvements and pavement reconstruction.

Council has been discussing some proposed modifications to its plans with EVA representatives to help minimise the impact of the project on the village’s heritage character.

Mrs Tuckerman said she was concerned that she hadn’t been briefed about the Exeter Railway Station project before community consultation commenced – particularly given the short timeframe and the significance of the proposed changes to a “much-loved and heritage-listed station precinct”.

“I have conveyed to the (NSW) Government that local residents expect meaningful consultation and transparency on projects of this nature,” she said.

Mrs Tuckerman said the strength of feeling within the community about the railway station project was clear.

She said many residents were “understandably concerned” over whether alternative options were thoroughly considered and whether more could be done to preserve the mature trees and the character of Exeter Station.

Mrs Tuckerman said she would continue to advocate for the community as the consultation process progressed.

Exeter Railway Station was officially opened in 1870 on the Main Southern Line and is considered one of the best ‘small station complexes’ in New South Wales.

One railway buff has described it on Facebook as a “special old railway station”.
