The Southern Highlands is set to host a surprise round of the Formula 1 season after a late reshuffle forced organisers to relocate races from the Middle East.

Multiple races scheduled in the region have been cancelled due to escalating tensions, prompting Formula 1 officials to seek an alternative venue at short notice.

In a move that has stunned motorsport fans, a soon to be constructed temporary circuit in the Southern Highlands has been approved to host the event.

The track is understood to be located within the proposed Bowral South development area, with works reportedly underway in recent months and accelerated in recent weeks.

The NSW Premier, Prime Minister, Council's General Manager and Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali have today appeared in Bowral to formally announce the race.

Sources indicate the circuit will feature a mix of high-speed straights and tight technical sections, incorporating elements of planned road networks and surrounding land.

Local authorities have been briefed on the proposal, with traffic management, accommodation and security planning already underway.

Officials say the region’s proximity to Sydney, combined with its cooler climate, airport, and established tourism infrastructure, made it an attractive fallback option.

Australian driver Oscar Piastri said the circuit would provide a strong test.

“It’s a really interesting layout. There’s a good mix of high-speed sections and technical corners, which should make it a proper challenge for drivers. I am told I may need my wet tyres in sections near the river."

“It’s not a location anyone expected, but it’s exciting to see Formula 1 exploring new places in Australia. I hope the potholes are all fixed as I have heard some bad things about roads in the Highlands.”

Early estimates suggest 150,000 visitors will descend on the Highlands, Tablelands and Wollondilly.

Businesses across Bowral, Mittagong and Moss Vale are expected to benefit, with accommodation providers already preparing for a surge in demand.

Teams are understood to have begun logistical planning, with freight movements being redirected to Sydney.

Further details, including race dates and ticketing, are expected to be released shortly.

Residents have been advised to expect road closures and increased activity across parts of the Highlands over the next six weeks.
