Southern Highlands pine at Government House as Governor secures new term

A radiata pine grown in the Southern Highlands has taken centre stage at Government House just as NSW Premier Chris Minns confirms the reappointment of Governor Margaret Beazley for a further two-year term.
The five-metre Christmas tree, sourced from Penrose State Forest near Moss Vale, has been installed in the foyer of Government House as part of a long-running NSW tradition that sees real pine trees selected from state forests for the Governor’s residence.
The tree was prepared in time for the Christmas reception hosted by Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, whose term as Governor of New South Wales has now been extended until 1 May 2028.
Premier Chris Minns announced the extension, following approval of his recommendation to His Majesty King Charles III. The additional term will see Ms Beazley serve a total of nine years as Governor.
“I’m pleased that Her Excellency has agreed to continue in her role as Governor for another two years,” Mr Minns said. “She has served the people of NSW with commitment and care, and I’m grateful she will continue in this important position.”
The Christmas tree was selected by Forestry Corporation staff from Penrose State Forest for its shape and presentation before being transported to Government House in Sydney. A second, 3.5-metre radiata pine has also been supplied for display at Vaucluse House.
Radiata pine has been grown in the Moss Vale area for more than a century and remains a cornerstone of the Southern Highlands’ forestry industry.
For the Southern Highlands, the locally grown Christmas tree standing inside Government House offers a timely reminder that the region’s forests continue to play a quiet but enduring role at the heart of the state — even as NSW’s most senior vice-regal office enters a new chapter.
