More than 700 people visited Wingecarribee Shire on Sunday, including dozens of riders competing in the Hertz ProVelo Super League – Southern Highlands Queen Stage cycling race.
The event was broadcast live around the country on SBS, showcasing the Southern Highlands to a national audience.
Riders sped through a scenic 125 km race taking in Kangaloon Road and Tourist Road. While the course offered some of the region’s most picturesque countryside, competitors had little time to take in the views as they pushed the pace around the demanding circuit.
In the men’s race, Will Heffernan claimed the gold medal. Oliver Bleddon finished second, with Brayden Bloch taking third place. All three riders are based outside Wingecarribee Shire.
The women’s race produced a tight finish, with Sophie Edwards from Butterfields Ziptrack Racing taking the gold medal. Sophia Sammons from Team Redcat finished second, while Isla Bradbury from Team NstroMo secured the bronze.
The ProVelo Super League is an elite cycling competition described by organisers as “the road to the world tour”, providing a pathway for riders who aim to reach the top level of international cycling.
The riders now move on to northern New South Wales for the next major event on the calendar, the Grafton to Inverell classic.
