At a time of sorrow for Malta resident Joe Galea, Friday’s winning ride by son Sebastian in the 2025 Bong Bong Cup produced a moment of overwhelming pride.

Mr Galea travelled to Australia late last week for his father’s funeral, so it was purely by chance that he was trackside to watch his son Sebastian ride Valentine John to victory.

He said Sebastian had dedicated the win to his late grandfather.

Mr Galea was practically lost for words after the race but managed to tell The Southern Wire that he was “very proud” of his son.

He described Bong Bong as one of the nation’s pinnacle picnic races.

Sebastian was overjoyed with the win.

“Words can’t describe it,” he told The Southern Wire.

It is the first time that he has ridden at the Bong Bong Picnic Races.
