Motorists travelling on the Hume Highway near Sutton Forest are being urged to take care following a serious motor vehicle accident involving a large horse float.

Both sound bound lanes of the highway are currently closed and traffic is being diverted into the service station.

One north bound land is also closed to enable emergency services personnel to secure and clear the scene.

Other diversions are expected as police attempt to land a helicopter and motorists are being told to expect lengthy delays.

It is unknown how many people have been injured or the extent of their injuries.

Those people unable to avoid the area are being asked pay attention to signage and to follow any directions given by traffic controllers at the scene while diversions are in place.

A spokesperson for The Hume Police District has asked that motorists be patient and show kindness, as Police, RFS, NSW Ambulance and other services do their best to resolve the situation.

Those people able to delay their travel plans until the scene has been cleared are encouraged to do so.
