The King’s School has engaged an external cybersecurity expert to review its IT systems following a recent breach.

Parents were advised recently that a “criminal threat actor” had accessed systems managed by Instructure between April 25 and 29.

Instructure is the company that supports the school’s Student Learning Management System, Canvas.

Investigations are continuing but the school has advised parents that the data involved appears to include usernames, email addresses, course names and enrolment details.

There is no evidence that the information has been misused.

Core learning material including course content, student submissions and credentials was not affected.

Canvas is not used by the school to store medical, wellbeing, financial, counselling, learning support or disciplinary records.

Tudor House in Moss Vale is one of the school’s three campuses. In its latest update, the school says it has reported the incident to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.

“We have also engaged an external cybersecurity consultant to review Canvas, related platforms and the school’s broader systems,” Director Office of the Headmaster, Greg Alderson, said.

“This work supports our regular security testing. “There is no evidence that the accessed information has been misused,” Mr Alderson said.

“Additional monitoring is in place and the provider has strengthened its systems.

“The school has also taken further steps, including changing administrator accounts and system keys and reviewing security logs with independent specialists”, Mr Alderson said the school remained in active contact with Instructure, the National Office of Cybersecurity, Independent Schools NSW and external consultants “to ensure strong oversight and a thorough response”. He said the school would provide further information “as soon as verified information about what data was breached becomes available”.

In the meantime, he has advised members of the school community to remain alert to phishing or unexpected contacts.
