Scheduled hazard reduction burns this Saturday

The RFS advises that two hazard reduction burns will be carried out this Saturday 27 September in the Southern Highlands – the first on Medway Rd at Medway, directly south of the Medway Colliery, and the second near Acacia St, Colo Vale.

The Medway burn will be carried out over an 11-hectare (27 acre) area for a period of two days, with the Colo Vale burn over a 1.5-hectare (3.7 acre) area for one day.

The RFS advise that if a hazard reduction burn is carried out in a particular area, residents must:

Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering their homes;

Keep outdoor furniture under cover to prevent ember burns;

Retract pool covers to prevent ember damage;

Remove washing from clotheslines;

Ensure pets have a protected area;

Vehicles must slow down, keep windows up, and turn their headlights on; and

Sightseers must keep away from burns for their own safety.

If anyone has asthma or a lung condition, they must reduce outdoor activities if smoke levels are high, and if shortness of breath or coughing develops, take their reliever medicine or seek medical advice.
