Goulburn’s Rocky Hill War Memorial Museum is officially opening a new and compelling exhibition today (Monday, 1 December), marking the lead-up to the centenary of the Rocky Hill War Memorial Tower, entitled ‘In Their Honour: A Century of Remembrance at Rocky Hill’.

Opened on 15 December 1925, the Rocky Hill War Memorial stands as a lasting tribute to the men and women of Goulburn and the surrounding districts who served in the First World War.

Over the past century, it has become one of the city’s most cherished landmarks — an enduring symbol of remembrance, resilience, and community spirit.

The forthcoming exhibition delves into the origins of the memorial, built 100 years ago to honour those who served during the Great War.

Through rarely seen portraits, photographs, and objects from the Museum’s collection —many being exhibited publicly for the first time — the display explores the personal stories of service personnel and those on the home front.

These moving accounts of dedication, sacrifice, and endurance offer visitors a deeper understanding of the local impact of global conflict and how it shaped both Goulburn’s identity and the broader story of Australia.

As part of the centenary commemorations, community groups and schools from across the Goulburn and District region have been invited to participate in special projects that will form part of the exhibition.

Contributions will include handcrafted poppies for a commemorative display in the Rocky Hill Cottage Museum, student-coloured illustrations of the memorial tower, and creative models of the tower produced individually or in groups.

Goulburn Mulwaree Council’s Museums Coordinator, Justin Croft, said the exhibition offers a meaningful opportunity to reflect on a century of remembrance.

“As we approach the 100th anniversary of the Rocky Hill War Memorial Tower on December 15, it’s a wonderful time to honour the people who made the memorial possible and to share the multi-layered stories connected to the significant objects in our collection,” he said.

The exhibition will open to the public at the Rocky Hill War Memorial Museum, 256 Memorial Road Goulburn.

The Museum and Memorial Tower are open from 10am to 4pm on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays, and Wednesdays.

They are also open on all public holidays and school holidays. Admission is via donation.
