Residents petition state government to reverse speed limit decision

For residents of the hamlets of Rugby (52 kms west of Crookwell and 33 kms north - east of Boorowa) and Narrawa (33kms west of Crookwell), a petition to improve the quality of the road’s surface rather than just reduce the speed limit is gaining traction.

For residents of the hamlets of Rugby (52 kms west of Crookwell and 33 kms north - east of Boorowa) and Narrawa (33kms west of Crookwell), a petition to improve the quality of the road’s surface rather than just reduce the speed limit is gaining traction.

The road crosses the Lachlan River and Narrawa Creek in several spots and residents say the road is in a poor condition, but they feel that rather than decreasing the speed limit, that repairs to the road should be carried out to make the surface better.

They have sent an e-petition to the NSW State Parliament Legislative Assembly to reverse the decision to decrease the speed limit on the road to 80km/h from 100km/h, which currently has 787 signatures.

“To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, we the undersigned petitioners, being users and residents of Rugby and Narrawa Rds, bring to the attention of the House our ongoing concerns about the poor conditions of these roads and the lack of upgrades and maintenance,” they state.

“Instead of directly addressing these concerns, Transport for NSW has introduced reduced speed limits, which limit accessibility and diminish the liveability of the area for local communities. Thank you to all that have signed already! And if you haven’t yet, your support will be greatly appreciated!”

The Federal government are also considering moving to a model that will see default speed limits on roads outside built-up areas reduced from 100km/h to 80km/h.

“This will not only affect the Rugby/Narrawa Roads, but all roads within our district and all roads in regional, rural and remote areas,” a spokesperson for Facebook page Crookwell Community Hub said.

“The Rugby/Narrawa Road decision is just the tip of the iceberg. Currently infrastructure.gov.au are taking feedback from interested persons on this proposed change. If you feel that a move like this will impact you, you can have your say.”

According to data from Infrastructure Australia, the risk of being killed on a regional or remote road is 11 times higher compared to a road in a major city.

“Your feedback will inform updates to the Australian Road Rules for sealed and unsealed roads outside of built-up areas, which can be considered by state and territory governments,” they state on their website.
