Karaoke fundraiser a great success
The Highlands rang out to the sound of both fantastic and awkward singing moments at a Karaoke fundraising night last night. The event was held to raise funds to fight the proposed Repoly plastic recycling facility in Moss Vale.
The Highlands rang out to the sound of both fantastic and awkward singing moments at a Karaoke fundraising night last night. The event was held to raise funds to fight the proposed Repoly plastic recycling facility in Moss Vale.
The sold out event saw 175 people let their hair down and have a sing and a dance as well as enjoy tasty pies from Gumnut Patisserie, drinks and other food from the winery itself and even coffee.
Emcee for the night was celebrity Julia Zemiro, who kept the crowd entertained with her hilarious anecdotes and accounts of meeting world famous band ABBA at the Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden and much more.
Even local councillors and politicians got involved in the night, with Wingecarribee Shire councillors Rachel Russell, Sara Moylan and Heather Champion and even State Member for Wollondilly Judy Hannan joining in with a song on stage.
There were even some spectacular singing moments from Moss Vale's Madeline Beckett, who wowed judges on ‘The Voice’ recently with her amazing voice, as well as Casey Foster from Highlands Theatre Group (who will be playing King Herod in their upcoming production of Jesus Christ Superstar) and a number of others.
Reject Repoly Karaoke Night organiser Anna Phillips told The Southern Wire that she was really pleased with the turn out, and that it was a vital win for the campaign and for the community to fight back against Repoly's plastic recycling plant.
"It was great to see all cross sections of the community; from teenagers from Moss Vale High School through to the older generations participate in the night," Anna Phillips said.
"I now encourage everyone to make an appearance at the first day of the hearing on site by the NSW Land and Environment Court at the Repoly site on October 19, so that we can show the commissioner and legal teams that we are united as a community in this fight."
Even your scribe got up and had a sing himself, singing 'Golden Brown' by The Stranglers and Australian Crawl's 'Reckless' - and yes, it has been filmed for evidence!
Anna Phillips also told The Southern Wire she will keep everyone informed as to how much money was raised from the night and for people on social media throughout the Southern Highlands and further afield over the weekend.
