Regional communities deserve better infrastructure according to Member for Goulburn Wendy Tuckerman.
The MP said regional infrastructure had fallen into disrepair under the Minns Labor Government but the Liberals and Nationals would provide regional NSW with an equitable share of infrastructure funding.
She said a Regional Infrastructure Guarantee would ensure that 25 per cent of infrastructure funding would go to regional areas, including her own electorate.
Mrs Tuckerman said delays and deteriorating conditions were becoming “defining features” of the current government’s infrastructure record.
“Key regional roads across the Goulburn electorate, especially sections of arterial and local roads, have been neglected and NSW’s major roads are too often closed, reduced to single lanes, or becoming increasingly unsafe to drive on,” Mrs Tuckerman said.
She accused the government of using ‘regional’ funding programs for projects in places like Liverpool and Parramatta and of ‘skewing’ funding criteria to favour major metropolitan areas, including Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle.
“Our communities deserve better than crumbling infrastructure, patchwork fixes and constant delays,” Mrs Tuckerman said
“This neglect impacts not only safety, but also local businesses, freight, and everyday travel - let alone the cost to councils scrambling to do their best with less.”
NSW Opposition Leader Kellie Sloane said the Regional Infrastructure Guarantee would improve access to clean drinking water across NSW, improve road safety, and allow regional villages, towns and cities to reach their potential.
“Our Regional Infrastructure Guarantee will mean towns in regional NSW will get their fair share,” Mrs Sloane said.
“When it comes to hospitals and schools, water infrastructure, roads rail and bridges, we won’t see the regions left behind,” Ms Sloane said.
NSW Nationals Leader Gurmesh Singh said 25 per cent of people in NSW lived outside Greater Sydney, Newcastle, and Wollongong.
“All regional NSW asks for is a fair share, and under our government, that is what they’ll get,” Mr Singh said.
